“Bringing Together Commodity Sourcing and Forest Protection” was the title of the side event hosted by the US Center at COP22 to provide an overview of the Commodities/Jurisdictions Approach (CJA) launched during the previous COP by a group of companies to support jurisdictional approaches for reducing deforestation in commodity supply chains. The event shed light on how jurisdictional REDD+ programmes to address deforestation and climate change could bring opportunities for companies to meet their sustainability commitments.
Speakers included representatives from sectors that are key for the implementation of CJA including companies (Marks & Spencer), development banks (the World Bank), and governments (US Department of State and Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo). In the discussion, participants shared their perspectives on CJA and noted next steps to operationalize the approach such as the creation of a multi-stakeholder working group and the establishment of criteria to assess jurisdictional programmes.
